The Shelford Group warmly welcomes the recommendations of the House of Lords Select Committee on the Long-term Sustainability of the NHS and Adult Social Care. We support the firm assertion that a tax-funded, free-at-the-point-of-use NHS should be sustainable for the long term, provided there is increased funding for the NHS and social care to meet the cost pressures of an ageing population and advances in medical technology. The suggestion for an OBR-style independent body to advise on long term funding issues is consistent with our recommendations to the committee. Their Lordships are entirely right to include within the scope of their inquiry social care as well as the NHS because the two services are interdependent and in need of far greater integration nationally and locally. We also support the focus on better strategic planning for our future workforce needs, the crucial need in the context of Brexit to reassure overseas staff that they are needed and highly valued, and the importance of maintaining workforce morale now and in the future.

The Shelford Group gave written and oral evidence to the committee in 2016. Sir Mike Deegan, Dame Julie Moore and Sir Andrew Cash presented their views in person, to expand on our written submission, to the Lords Committee on 15 November 2016. Some of their observations, and the thoughts of our other CEOs, can be viewed here.
