The Shelford Group welcomes the publication of the Cavendish Coalition’s evidence to the Health Select Committee’s inquiry into Brexit and Health and Social Care. It echoes many of the main points of our own evidence to the committee, which is available here.

Brexit will have a significant impact on the NHS, social care and UK life sciences. It offers opportunities to widen our global networks, export goods and services overseas that have been developed in our internationally competitive health service, universities and pharmaceutical industry. It is also an important opportunity to invest in training the next generation of our domestic healthcare workforce. However, there are a number of significant risks that must be taken into account by policy makers during the negotiation process, given the multiple links these sectors have with Europe.

We believe that the greatest priorities are the need to recruit and retain a highly-skilled and diverse workforce, with continuing professional mobility into the UK, and the need to protect funding and encourage international collaboration for scientific research. We welcome the Committee’s inquiry given the need to build and evidence base on these areas, and welcome future opportunities to contribute to this debate.
