Sir Michael Deegan becomes new Deputy Chair of the Shelford Group

Sir Michael Deegan, Chief Executive of Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been appointed as Deputy Chair of the Shelford Group, succeeding Sir Ron Kerr, current Chair of the Group and Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Sir Michael Deegan, Chief Executive of Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been appointed as Deputy Chair of the Shelford Group, succeeding Sir Ron Kerr, current Chair of the Group and Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Sir Michael said upon his appointment:

“I am delighted to be representing my Shelford peers as Deputy Chair of the Shelford Group alongside Sir Ron Kerr.

“The NHS is at a critical moment in time, and the Shelford Group is eager to offer our collective expertise, leadership and experience in driving renewed enthusiasm and momentum within our sector and in partnership with colleagues across the NHS towards developing a sustainable world-class healthcare system.

“Furthermore, it is an exciting time to be a part of the life sciences industry in the UK. The Shelford Group trusts are partnered with some of the country’s leading Academic Health Science Centres and Academic Health Science Networks, and we look forward to exploring how to contribute further to advancing the NHS’s contribution to UK plc and developing innovative solutions to healthcare that can be exported worldwide.”

Sir Ron Kerr said of Sir Michael’s appointment: “Sir Michael has had an exceptional career to date in the NHS, and will bring a breadth of expertise to the Group’s work.

“I look forward to working closely with him in promoting Shelford’s agenda of excellence in patient care and clinical research.”

 

Notes

Sir Michael Deegan has been Chief Executive of Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2001 and has led the Trust through a successful merger, upon its establishment; overseen the £520m PFI redevelopment of its Oxford Road campus; attained, in partnership with the University of Manchester, Biomedical Research Centre designation in 2008; and, managed the transition to Foundation Trust status with effect from January 2009.

Prior to his current appointment, he was Chief Executive of North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust and, in summer 2000, was seconded to the Department of Health as Project Director charged with developing the NHS Plan. Earlier in his career, Mike had worked for several years in the Department of Health, latterly as the Acting Director of Human Resources for the NHS.

Mike has a First Degree in Law and a Masters Degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Warwick. He was awarded a CBE in 2002 for services to the NHS and received his knighthood in the 2014 Birthday Honours List. He has also worked widely across the public sector including roles in local government and education.

The chairmanship of the Shelford Group changes on an annual basis. The elected Deputy Chair assumes the role of Chair following their year as Deputy.
