Guy’s and St Thomas’ Chief Executive Sir Ron Kerr and King’s College Hospital Chief Executive Tim Smart have been appointed as co-Vice Chairs of the Shelford Group. This follows Sir Andrew Cash’s move to Chair of the Group in June 2014.

On his appointment, Sir Ron said:

“I'm delighted to be appointed Vice Chair of the Shelford Group. This is an important time for the Shelford Group to be influencing the future direction of UK health policy. With colleagues, I look forward to engaging a wide range of stakeholders as we argue for policy that will deliver exceptional care for patients and recognise the special contribution that academic teaching hospitals make to medical research and teaching in this country.”

Tim Smart said:

“I am honoured to be asked to be Vice Chair of Shelford, along with my friend and KHP colleague Sir Ron Kerr. Shelford represents the backbone of the NHS, and we have an important role in the next twelve months to influence policy so that the highest quality of compassionate care can be delivered within a constrained resources envelope. All ten members are leading participants in AHSCs and AHSNs. As such we play an important part in working with the life sciences industry in England and through those connections we can and should contribute to health and well-being throughout the nation.”

Notes:

1. Sir Ron Kerr took up the position of Chief Executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in October 2007. He has gained a wealth of experience from his extremely successful and wide-ranging NHS career, including roles at a local, regional and national level.

Previous roles include Director of Operations for the NHS Executive, Regional Director for North Thames Regional Office, Chief Executive of the South East London Commissioning Agency and Chairman of the Association of UK University Hospitals.

2. Tim Smart was appointed Chief Executive of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in November 2008. He has had a successful thirty-year business leadership track record, in a number of roles both in the UK and overseas.

Prior to his appointment at King’s, as Managing Director of BT Global Services UK, Mr Smart was responsible for all of BT Global’s business with the UK government and large enterprises in the UK, including the NHS. He has worked in the Middle East, the Netherlands and the United States. He also has experience as a non-executive director of a US-listed financial services company. Mr Smart is a member of the Foundation Trust Network Board and the Board of King’s Health Partners.

3. In line with the Shelford Group’s constitution, one of the Vice Chairs will become Chair for the following year, 2015-16.
