Sir Robert, Chief Executive of University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust, will succeed Dame Julie Moore as Chair of the Shelford Group from 1st May 2013 for one year’s term. At her last meeting as Chair, the Group expressed their thanks to Dame Julie for having guided the Group through what has been a formative year for the Shelford Group as the NHS reforms have been developed and rolled out.

On standing down from her role as Shelford Group Chair, Dame Julie said:

“It has been a great privilege to have chaired the Shelford Group for the past year, during this challenging and uncertain time for the NHS. I have been proud to work alongside my esteemed Shelford Group colleagues and I look forward to continuing to do so under Sir Robert’s leadership. I am pleased to be handing over the role of Chair to such a proven effective and dynamic leader, under whose chairmanship I am sure that the Shelford Group will make a valuable contribution to the systemic changes that lie ahead”.

The Shelford Group, which comprises ten leading NHS multi-specialty academic healthcare organisations, aspires to demonstrate system-wide leadership, especially during this period of transition for the NHS, for both the benefit of patients and the British economy. Its member trusts are dedicated to excellence in clinical research, education and patient care.

Sir Robert has been a Chief Executive in the NHS for twenty-eight years and has been Chief Executive of UCLH since November 2000. On his appointment as Chair of the Shelford Group, Sir Robert said:

“I’m proud to take on the Chairmanship of the Shelford Group and would like to congratulate Dame Julie Moore for her fantastic leadership in the past year. Our original purpose, to learn from each other through benchmarking, has evolved into a recognition of the need to promote our research, academic and patient interests. We hope that the unified voice of ten leading hospitals in the NHS will continue to have an impact on policy makers and politicians at a time of great challenge and opportunity for the NHS. Our hospitals and partner universities represent unique national assets with worldwide reputations that make a very considerable contribution to wealth and knowledge creation, as well as providing a significant part of the most specialist patient care in the NHS”.
