It is evident that poverty is a debilitating and deadly disease. With a yawning gap between people with a decent, or even regal, income and people who hardly earn anything, it has never been clearer to me what poverty does to health.

The media coverage around the NHS Long Term Plan might lead you to think the plan represents a disparate mix of popular policy commitments. You might also assume there are no major implications for acute and specialist hospitals like ours. However, if you read the plan’s 130 plus pages, you will find a pretty clear and coherent direction of travel for the whole of the NHS.
