Procurement Programme

The Shelford Group is working in collaboration to develop and enhance its Procurement and Supply Chain capability and also leverage the scale and the status of its members to deliver market changing and significant benefits. A Shelford Group Procurement Strategy has been developed and underpins a ground-breaking programme of work focused on collaborative sourcing, enhancing Procurement and Supply chain capability and implementing a ‘best of breed’ approach to procurement technology.

This innovative programme aims to ensure that the 10 trusts leverage their combined buying power to identify those suppliers who can provide high quality, leading medical technology to enable superior clinical outcomes, whilst ensuring best value for money. Led by the Procurement Directors, and supported by key delivery partners, the programme works closely with leading clinicians from within the trusts to ensure Shelford Group effectively procure the right products and services at a competitive price while supporting innovation and efficiency, and that these benefits can be shared with other hospitals and the wider NHS.

Recent project highlights:

  • Shelford Group worked with key suppliers to agree a common ‘guide price’ for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Systems which could enable savings of 20% through further clinically-led standardisation and commitment.
  • The Group worked with NHS Supply Chain to run a competitive procurement exercise for Syringes and Needles to find the most suitable clinical products at the best price. Shelford Group and associated trusts awarded to 3 suppliers, enabling savings of over 40%.
  • The Shelford Group negotiated a national price for Liver Transplant Fluid enabling savings of around 10%.
